Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup whole milk, warmed
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warmed milk and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
  6. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon for the filling.
  7. Roll out the dough into a 12×16 inch rectangle and spread softened butter evenly over it.
  8. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the buttered surface.
  9. Starting at the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log.
  10. Cut into 12 equal slices and place in a greased baking dish.
  11. Cover and let rolls rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  12. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C), then bake rolls for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  13. While baking, whisk together evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt to create the tres leches glaze.
  14. Remove cinnamon rolls from oven and let cool slightly, then poke holes all over the rolls with a fork or skewer.
  15. Pour the tres leches glaze evenly over the warm rolls, allowing it to soak in.
  16. Serve rolls warm or chilled, optionally topped with whipped cream or a dusting of cinnamon.

Notes

For extra indulgence, top the rolls with freshly whipped cream and a sprinkle of toasted cinnamon before serving.
