Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry Shortcake is a classic American dessert featuring tender, buttery shortcakes layered with fresh strawberries and whipped cream for a light and delightful treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for strawberries)
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for whipped cream)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fingers until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract just until combined; do not overmix.
  5. Drop dough by large spoonfuls onto prepared baking sheet to form 6 shortcakes.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and let cool on a wire rack.
  7. While shortcakes bake, toss sliced strawberries with 1/4 cup sugar and let macerate for at least 10 minutes.
  8. In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
  9. To assemble, slice shortcakes in half horizontally. Spoon strawberries and their juice over the bottom half, top with whipped cream, and cover with the top half.
  10. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Notes

For an extra touch, add a splash of balsamic vinegar to the strawberries while macerating to enhance their flavor.
