Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 10 cups water (for boiling)
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling
  • Food coloring markers (optional, for decorating)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. Divide dough into 10 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope about 12 inches long, then shape into a straight ‘lightsaber’ shape with one end slightly tapered.
  7. Bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil in a large pot.
  8. Boil pretzel ropes a few at a time for 30 seconds each. Remove with slotted spoon and place on prepared baking sheets.
  9. Sprinkle lightly with coarse sea salt.
  10. Bake pretzels for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Allow to cool slightly before optionally decorating the handles with food coloring markers to resemble Star Wars lightsabers.
