These Sourdough Discard Cinnamon Sugar Twists are a deliciously crisp and sweet treat that makes perfect use of leftover sourdough starter, offering a delightful balance of cinnamon and sugar in every bite.

  • 1 cup sourdough discard (unfed)
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter, divided
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the sourdough discard, flour, sugar, and salt. Stir until a rough dough forms.
  3. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until smooth, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Roll dough into a 12×8 inch rectangle.
  5. Brush the melted butter evenly over the dough surface.
  6. Mix cinnamon and granulated sugar together, then sprinkle evenly over the buttered dough.
  7. Cut the dough into strips approximately 1 inch wide and 6-8 inches long.
  8. Twist each strip several times and place on the prepared baking sheet, spacing about 1 inch apart.
  9. Brush the twists with remaining melted butter and sprinkle additional cinnamon sugar on top if desired.
  10. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.
  11. Remove from oven and cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

For an extra indulgent twist, drizzle the cooled twists with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and milk, or serve alongside a warm cup of coffee or tea.
