Homemade Candy Apples

Crisp apples coated in a shiny, sweet candy shell make for a classic treat that’s perfect for fall festivals and festive occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples, washed and dried
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 6 wooden sticks

Instructions

  1. Insert wooden sticks into the stem end of each apple and set aside on a lined baking sheet.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  3. Attach a candy thermometer to the side of the pan and bring mixture to a boil without stirring.
  4. When the syrup reaches 300°F (hard crack stage), remove from heat and quickly stir in red food coloring and vanilla extract if using.
  5. Working quickly, dip each apple into the hot candy mixture, swirling to coat evenly.
  6. Allow excess candy to drip off, then place coated apples back onto the baking sheet to cool and harden completely.
  7. Once set, store candy apples in a cool, dry place and enjoy within 24 hours for best freshness.

Notes

For a fun variation, try rolling the freshly coated apples in chopped nuts, sprinkles, or crushed cookies before the candy hardens.
