Delight in these soft, tangy Blueberry Lemon Sourdough Sweet Rolls that combine the natural tang of sourdough with fresh blueberries and zesty lemon for a flavorful breakfast or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups active sourdough starter
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warm
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: 1/4 cup powdered sugar for glaze
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon lemon juice for glaze

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm milk, melted butter, egg, sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
  2. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Fold in the fresh blueberries gently to avoid breaking them.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise at room temperature for 4–6 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Roll the dough into a rectangle about 12×16 inches. Optional: brush with melted butter.
  6. Roll the dough tightly into a log and cut into 10 equal slices.
  7. Place the rolls in a greased baking dish spaced slightly apart, cover, and let rise another 1–2 hours until puffy.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25–30 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool slightly. If desired, mix powdered sugar with lemon juice to make a glaze, and drizzle over warm rolls before serving.

Notes

For an extra burst of flavor, serve these rolls warm with a dollop of whipped cream or cream cheese. You can also swap fresh blueberries for frozen ones if out of season.
