Smash Burger

Smash Burger

A Smash Burger is a juicy, flavorful American classic featuring thinly pressed beef patties seared to perfection on a hot griddle, topped with melted cheese and fresh fixings served on a soft bun.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 4 soft hamburger buns
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, onions, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Preheat a cast iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until very hot.
  2. Divide the ground beef into 4 equal 4-ounce balls; do not overwork the meat.
  3. Lightly oil the skillet or griddle.
  4. Place one ball of beef on the skillet and immediately smash it down firmly with a heavy spatula to form a thin patty (about ¼ inch thick).
  5. Season the patty with salt and pepper.
  6. Cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes until edges are crispy and brown.
  7. Flip the patty and immediately place a slice of cheese on top; cook for another 1-2 minutes until cheese melts and patty is cooked through.
  8. Toast the buns lightly on the skillet during the last minute of cooking.
  9. Assemble the burger by placing the patty on the bun and adding desired toppings.
  10. Repeat steps for remaining patties and serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a thin layer of mayo on the buns and use a cast iron skillet to get the best crispy crust on the patties.
