Delight in these fun and festive Basketball Sugar Cookies, perfect for game day or any sports celebration with their soft texture and sweet, buttery flavor.

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Orange and black royal icing or colored frosting for decorating

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder; set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using).
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk until dough forms.
  6. Roll out dough on a floured surface to ¼ inch thickness.
  7. Use a basketball-shaped cookie cutter or round cutter to cut out cookies and place onto prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden. Let cool on wire racks.
  9. Decorate cooled cookies with orange royal icing and pipe black lines to mimic a basketball.
  10. Allow icing to dry completely before serving or storing.

Notes

For best results, chill the dough for 30 minutes before rolling to make cutting easier. You can also use colored sugar sprinkles for extra texture.
