Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 cup peeled and diced apples
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast; let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms, about 8-10 minutes.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Meanwhile, combine diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl; set aside.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal portions.
  6. Flatten each portion slightly, place a spoonful of the apple mixture in the center, then fold and seal the dough around the filling, forming a ball.
  7. Poke a hole through the center of each ball and gently stretch to create a bagel shape.
  8. Boil a large pot of water; boil each bagel for 1 minute on each side, then transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Brush bagels with beaten egg and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Brush with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven and let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For an extra touch, serve warm with a dollop of vanilla cream cheese or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
