Southern Cornbread

A classic Southern Cornbread recipe that is moist, slightly sweet, and perfect as a comforting side dish for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking pan or cast-iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the eggs and then stir in buttermilk and melted butter.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  6. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

For a richer flavor, try adding a cup of fresh corn kernels or a handful of shredded cheddar cheese before baking.
