Scalloped Potatoes are a creamy, cheesy baked side dish featuring thinly sliced potatoes layered with a rich sauce and melted cheese, perfect for comforting family meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 medium potatoes)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk, cooking until sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
  4. Remove sauce from heat and stir in salt, pepper, garlic powder, and 1 cup cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  5. If using, sauté chopped onion until soft and add to the cheese sauce.
  6. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  7. Repeat layering with remaining potatoes and sauce.
  8. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese evenly on top.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  10. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, add cooked bacon bits or fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary before baking. Serve with a green salad for a complete meal.
