  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, ground cloves, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  6. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Flatten each ball slightly with the palm of your hand or the bottom of a glass.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  9. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For an extra touch of flavor, sprinkle a bit of coarse sugar on top before baking or drizzle with a light orange glaze once cooled.
