This Homemade Green Bean Casserole features fresh green beans and a creamy mushroom sauce topped with crispy fried onions, offering a comforting classic side dish perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed and cut
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Blanch green beans in boiling water for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp; drain and set aside.
  3. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat and sauté onions and garlic until translucent.
  4. Add mushrooms and cook until softened and moisture evaporates, about 5 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle flour over mushroom mixture and stir to combine, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Gradually whisk in milk and cream, continuing to cook until sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  7. Stir in soy sauce, salt, and pepper.
  8. Combine sauce with green beans, then transfer to a baking dish.
  9. Bake uncovered for 20 minutes, then top with crispy fried onions.
  10. Return to oven and bake an additional 5 minutes until onions are golden and casserole is bubbly.

Notes

For extra crunch, reserve some fried onions to sprinkle on top just before serving. This dish pairs wonderfully with roasted meats.
