  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 tablespoons sour cream
  • For the frosting:
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
  5. Mix in the sour cream until combined.
  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  7. Roll the dough out on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness.
  8. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until the edges are just starting to turn golden.
  10. Allow cookies to cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.
  11. For the frosting, beat together powdered sugar, butter, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  12. Add red food coloring as desired and mix well.
  13. Spread frosting onto cooled cookies and let set before serving.

For a festive touch, sprinkle colored sugar or edible glitter on the frosting before it sets.
