French Toast Casserole

This French Toast Casserole is a warm, comforting breakfast dish featuring custardy bread baked to golden perfection, perfect for feeding a crowd or a weekend treat.

  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Place the cubed French bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing lightly to soak.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results.
  6. Remove from refrigerator 30 minutes before baking.
  7. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, chopped nuts, and melted butter; sprinkle evenly over the soaked bread.
  8. Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes until the top is golden brown and the casserole is set.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving. Optionally drizzle with maple syrup or dust with powdered sugar.

Notes

For added flavor, serve with fresh berries or a dollop of whipped cream. You can also prepare it the night before for an effortless morning meal.
