French Toast Bake recipe

This French Toast Bake is a warm, comforting breakfast casserole featuring layers of custardy bread baked to golden perfection, perfect for family mornings or brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups cubed day-old bread (such as brioche or challah)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • Maple syrup, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Place the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to help the bread absorb the custard.
  5. Dot the top with small pieces of butter.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight to soak.
  7. Remove the baking dish from the fridge, uncover, and bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
  8. Let it cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with maple syrup if desired.

Notes

For added texture and flavor, sprinkle chopped nuts or fresh berries on top before baking.
