  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough in half, wrap each portion in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out one portion of dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  8. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and place them on prepared baking sheets about 1 inch apart.
  9. Bake for 8-10 minutes until set but not hard.
  10. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  11. Optional: Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
